Roth vs. Traditional: Which Retirement Account Should You Choose?

September 15, 2026 Β· By Β· 3 min read

Almost every retirement account comes in two flavors: Roth (pay tax now, withdraw tax-free later) or Traditional (deduct now, pay tax on withdrawals). The choice comes down to one question: do you expect to be in a higher or lower tax bracket in retirement than you are today?

The one-sentence rule

If your tax rate will be higher in retirement, favor Roth (lock in today's lower rate). If it will be lower, favor Traditional (take the deduction now while your rate is high). When you're genuinely unsure, splitting contributions hedges the bet.

When Roth usually wins

  • You're early in your career or in a lower bracket now.
  • You expect strong growth (tax-free compounding is worth more the more it grows) β€” the same logic behind a crypto Roth IRA.
  • You value flexibility: Roth IRAs have no lifetime RMDs, and you can withdraw contributions anytime.

When Traditional usually wins

  • You're in your peak-earning years and want the deduction now.
  • You expect meaningfully lower income (and a lower bracket) in retirement.
  • You'd invest the up-front tax savings rather than spend them.

Put real numbers on it: estimate your target with how much do you need to retire and project growth with the compound-interest calculator.

Why many people use both

Holding some Roth and some Traditional gives you tax diversification β€” in retirement you can draw from whichever bucket keeps your tax bill lowest each year. High earners who can't contribute to a Roth directly can use a backdoor Roth. Contribution limits and eligibility come from the IRS.

Common questions

Roth or Traditional for a high earner?

Often Traditional for the deduction now, plus a backdoor Roth on the side for tax-free growth and flexibility.

Can I convert Traditional to Roth?

Yes β€” a Roth conversion moves money over and pays the tax now; it can make sense in lower-income years before RMDs begin.
